Film Screening and Discussion «Birds in the Mire», by Alida Dimitriou

The documentary «Birds in the Mire’ was held at the Athens Centre on June, 6, 2011. It is based on the Role of Women in the Greek Resistance against the Nazi Occupation.

Alida Dimitriou presented her documentary “Birds in the Mire” (Greek with English subtitles) about the participation and contribution of women to the Greek Resistance during the Nazi Occupation (1941-44), as well as to the consequences they suffered. The film is based on the oral testimonies of those women that survived and follows the historical sequence of events. However, the focus of the film is not on the description of the historical events but rather the memories of these women’s experiences and emotional traumas. The film reveals these women’s life stance in the face of extreme circumstances that are usually experienced by men, as well as the fact that under similar conditions women are equally capable of acts of heroism, such as those commonly attributed to men only. The film won, among others, the First Prize of Audience in 10th International Thessaloniki Documentary Festival (2088).

Alida Dimitriou briefly contextualized the film with the help of Maria Velioti, an anthropologist who teaches at the University of the Peloponnese. Professor Christina von Nolcken from the University of Chicago moderated.

The admission was free. For more information, please call 210-7012268 or 210-7015242.
