The Athens Centre facilities include a small library for the use of students and faculty which includes relevant works for class material mainly focused on Ancient Greek History, Ancient Greek Literature, Philosophy, and Mythology, Archaeology, and Byzantine History. At the students’ disposal is also a section with multiple copies of numerous travel guides on Greece and other parts of Europe.
USE OF LIBRARY
WHERE IS IT?
There is a library in the Athens Centre in the big classroom right next to the Athens Centre office. As you enter the classroom, you can find the library cupboards to your left at the end of the room.
WHERE CAN YOU FIND WHAT?
According to their content, the books are labeled with classifications (A for ancient authors, Art/Archy for Art and Archeology, G for Guides, F for Festivals, etc.) You will find the alphabetical listing of the categories of books and roughly what subjects they contain inside every cupboard door.
Within the different classifications, the books are arranged alphabetically according to author. Ancient translated works (Socrates, Aristophanes, etc.) are arranged alphabetically according to title. Editions of collected works of ancient authors are placed in the end of each ancient author category.
The Travel Guides and information about Greece have a separate cupboard on the left of the library classroom, ordered first by country (Athens, Greece, Greece and islands, other places in Greece alphabetically, then Europe and other countries alphabetically) and alphabetically according to author or editor.
IS THERE A LIBRARY CATALOGUE?
Yes, there are two written catalogues on the top shelf in the lower library cupboard on the far right. One is categorized by author and the other by classification (CALL ID).
HOW DO I BORROW A BOOK?
There is a library card in the back of each book. You put your name and the date on it, take it out and you put it, alphabetically according to the title (e.g. «The Archaeology of Greece” goes under A) in the little box with library cards (last lower library cupboard on the right).
HOW DO I RETURN IT?
Please find your card in the library card box, put it back in the book and give the book to someone in the Athens Centre office.
WHAT IF A CLASS NEEDS MORE THAN ONE COPY OF A PARTICULAR BOOK?
The label on the outside of the book as well as the back of the book inside has a number on it. This number tells you how many copies of the book we have in store (e.g. if the book classification is labeled «Art/Archy 13″, that means we have 13 copies in total). In case more than one copy is needed, please check the number on the desired book to see how many copies we have in store and tell someone in the office how many of those you want.
Some books, however, have multiple copies accessable for you. In that case, just proceed as described above under «HOW DO I BORROW A BOOK”.
PLEASE MAKE SURE TO RETURN YOUR CARD TO THE BOOK
BEFORE YOU RETURN IT!
In case of questions, please do not hesitate to ask the office staff.
